We are a recreational group dedicated to enjoying and teaching traditional Scandinavian dance. We dance and teach couple dances and lively mixers from all five Nordic countries. Each Monday typically brings out 30 or more dancers of all abilities. We dance at Nordia House, 8800 SW Oleson Rd, Portland. Click here for map.
Mark your calendars! We will have some exciting visitors (and some locals) for the Harvest Dance. Yes, it will be at Nordia House!
Visit our Facebook page for more photos, videos and other cool stuff! Scroll through the live feed below! No need to belong to Facebook. Click the the box below to see more about particular items.
Everyone is Welcome!
Norske Runddansere does not discriminate. Anyone is welcome to join us- all you need is a willingness to give it a try.
Why? Our membership fees are just almost enough to meet our expenses. Our rent went up very significantly this year, so we still have a donation jar on the entry table. If your budget allows, would you please consider adding a little extra to your membership dues? If you can help, we thank you so very much!
We also have our own teaching DVDs for sale (set of two for $10) and our sturdy shoe bags for $10 each if you want to contribute that way!
Thank You Musicians and DJs!
A big thanks to those who play tunes for us every Monday!
Happening October 14th, 2019
Hello dance friends, dancing and teaching continue into this beautiful fall weather of October.
Paul and Johanna will continue teaching in a waltz mode this week, reviewing the dances from last week (Waltz, Familie Waltz, Festal Till Mona), and teaching a new dance, Hopsa, from Denmark. Denis will be manning the computerized jukebox and "spinning discs" of your favorite dances for the rest of the evening. And I expect Kim and/or David and/or others will show up with instruments to play some other fine tunes.
We are still at Nordia House, 8800 SW Oleson Rd, in Portland. And remember that teaching starts at 7:15 PM this year, not 7:30 PM as in the past.
Remember, also, that our membership year started on October 1st, so your dues for the 2019-2020 membership year are due now. Yes, because of a rent increase, dues have gone up from previous years. An editable and printable PDF of the membership application is available from our website.
Of great interest this week, there is a concert Tuesday, October 15, 2019, 7:30 PM at Nordia House featuring Fru Skagerrak, a young female trio of singing fiddlers, one each from Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. With our own Portland-based Varlese, led by Amy Hakansan, as the opening act. Complete information is available on the Nordic Northwest calendar.
Also coming soon is our annual Harvest Dance, this year featuring two guest musicians who currently live in Sweden, Per-Thomas Eriksson and Pasi Pasanen, supported by some of our local musicians. It will be October 28, 2019, from 7:30 - 10:00 PM. Wear a Nordic or Halloween costume, and bring finger food and/or drink to share. Please note that due to the rent increase, there is a fee for all attendees, members included.
Accommodations are filling up for our first annual Snoball in the Gorge, December 14, 2019, at the Menucha Retreat and Conference Center, with the great Portland-based band, Hapsala, playing for dancing. Registration for both overnight stays, and for just dinner and dancing is now being taken both at Monday night dancing and by mail via a printable PDF on the website. Register now so that you won't be disappointed when it fills up without you.
That is most of the news.
Weekly Dances - Fall Lessons!
Monday dances: September-May there is a lesson from 7:15 to 8:15pm, with open request dancing to 9:30. Summer Monday dances start at 7:15, but there are no lessons in summer. Become a Member - It's a Great Deal
Annual memberships are available. The fiscal year starts October 1st at a rate of $100. That's still only about $2.25 per dance if you attend them all, which is a great deal! In January our pro-rate schedule begins, and we also have other special discounts for those who need it, like students. It's never too late to join and start saving.
