Welcome! We are a recreational group dedicated to enjoying and teaching traditional folk dance. We dance and teach couple dances and lively mixers from all five Nordic countries. Each Monday typically brings out 30 or more dancers of all abilities. We dance at Nordia House, 8800 SW Oleson Rd, Portland. Click here for map.
Become a Member (click here)Annual memberships are available. The fiscal year starts October 1st at a rate of $125. That's still only about $2.50 per dance if you attend them all, which is a great deal! In January our pro-rate schedule begins, and we also have other special discounts for those who need it, like students. It's never too late to join and start saving. A number of superb live dance workshops are back this summer, and they’re now open for registration. You’ll find them listed here. Then, as we prepare for the new teaching sessions you will be promptly informed. NR Facebook Feed:If not visible below, see: https://www.facebook.com/Norskerunddansere
Donations Welcome (click here)Why? Our membership fees are just almost enough to meet our expenses. Our rent went up very significantly a couple of years ago, and we will still have a donation jar on the entry table. If your budget allows, would you please consider adding a little extra to your membership dues? If you can help, we thank you so very much!
Thank You Musicians and DJs!A big thanks to those who play tunes for us every Monday! We’re looking for people who want to fill the vital role of DJ for our dance evenings. Training will be provided if you’re new to this role. Please email us at [email protected] if you’re interested…and our heartfelt gratitude in advance!
Everyone is Welcome!Norske Runddansere does not discriminate. Anyone is welcome to join us- all you need is a willingness to give it a try.

NR members and friends,
Teaching again this week will be Joan and John, reviewing and enhancing the favorite Norwegian village dance (Bygdedans): Rørospols or Røros pols that they started teaching last week. This dance from Røros has two different turns, a bakmes counter-clockwise turn, and a pols clockwise turn. The dance is improvisational, but is usually done with walking patterns and maybe a little jumping around between alternations of the two turn types. It is a fun dance that is requested pretty much every week, so it is well worth learning (or reviewing if you already know it).
See you at Nordia House Monday evening. Doors open at 7 pm. Teaching hour will start at 7:15 pm. Bring good energy, favorite dances for the request board, and dance shoes. We'll send you home happy at 9:15 pm.
*If you are not receiving these weekly informative emails (i.e. above), simply send us a request at [email protected] and we'll add you to the list!

Annual Report from the President 12/27/2025
Greetings Norske Runddansere Members and Friends!
I hope all are having a happy holiday season, with a reminder that NR adds to the season’s festivities by continuing to dance through the holidays.
Consider this an annual report of sorts, catching up with some significant Board business as well.
After surprisingly great attendance during this summer’s “off-season,” we are now enjoying spirited attendance during what is normally a holiday lull. Whether it be recovery from the pandemic, folks seeking joy and community during the current national malaise, or simply new dancers finding their way to us, a populated and energetic dance floor has been impressive and may bode well as we enter a new year.
In addition to the PCC Community Ed folks we welcomed this fall, we continue to see new faces: dancers new to the area, those coming from other dance groups, and those seeing our notices on bulletin boards or in community papers. There are likely other sources of potential members out there; it’s just a matter of using our imagination. A full dance floor is a fun dance floor and gives us both critical mass & critical funds to dance into the future. Thanks to those who have introduced new people to our dancing, or who have posted notices or made announcements at various venues.
At its fall quarter meeting, the Board endorsed NR’s continued partnership with PCC. Timelines are set well ahead; not only will we welcome these dancers in their upcoming Winter Term, but Spring Term details are already set. We can expect new dancers as well as returning ones. NR’s long-standing code is to welcome anyone, any time of the year, doing our best to integrate them into our dancing. This can necessitate one-on-one “coaching,” as stated in the class description. Thanks to experienced dancers already doing this on the floor or out in the hall. Warm greetings and encouragement to newcomers is the best way to keep them coming.
In other significant business at its meeting, the Board created a Finance Committee to help with financial recording, tracking and reporting. Our finances are healthy, and though largely dependent on memberships, steady drop-in dancers have provided a surprising boost. Increased attendance at Special Event dances also helps. As we saw with the Harvest Dance, a good turn out means more fun for all. At its meeting, the Board confirmed Fossegrimen as the Knut Dance band, so don’t miss out on this wonderful event that ushers out the holidays as we dance the tree out of the hall to fantastic music.
While our Annual Meeting in March may seem a ways off, please note we are already looking to fill officer and Board positions of folks who have served in many capacities for several, and maybe many years. Much goes on behind the scenes of dancing and a number of people not only need a break, but have earned one. It is an exciting time to see numbers and energy grow on the dance floor over the last year. Some new ideas, perspectives – and leaders – in the ranks will add to that energy. It would be wonderful to have folks start thinking now about stepping forward to guide NR into what looks to be a great, vibrant future, full of possibilities.
Looking forward to seeing you on the dance floor!
